Promotional- modelingPromotional modeling shares very little with fashion modeling or print modeling, but it does require energetic, attractive people in a near endless variety of product or corporate-sponsored temporary events. Promotional modeling usually involves distributing free product samples or promotional information on site and can sometimes involve elaborate costumes.

Work as a promotional model is mostly seasonal at venues like sporting events, music concerts, seasonal festivals and local retail outlets like car dealerships and shopping malls. If you can smile and interact with the public in a positive manner, promotional modeling might be right for you.

Most candidates for promotional modeling include young men and women between the ages of 18 and 30 who are able to maintain a positive outlook and energy for long hours on the job. Most corporate clients sponsoring the events and hiring the models attempt to promote positive attention to their firms by employing friendly, personable people as models or spokespersons. Employment in promotional modeling is part-time and usually runs about $15 to $25 an hour. The downside is that promotional modeling jobs are not year-round employment. The upside is flexible scheduling and not having to travel far from home.

Good looks and a healthy appearance are not the ultimate requirement in promotional modeling. Successful promotional models are generally conventionally “good looking” people who can appear fresh all day without the need for extensive make-up application. Good manners and clear speech are big assets in representing the client company professionally. You won’t get rich in promotional modeling, but you can make reasonable money with seasonal employment in the field.

Modeling agenciesAnyone serious about a career in modeling should be serious about obtaining the services of a professional modeling agent. Exactly what does a modeling agent do? They find models work. Modeling agents negotiate job contracts and serve as employment agents, connecting models with paying clients that represent companies and products. Typical clients a modeling agent might have would be clothing companies, make-up manufacturers, retail stores and catalog companies.

Modeling agents can work for an agency or they might work independently. There are also modeling agents that specialize in specific areas of modeling such as runway, film, children or plus-size.

fashion modelingIn order to make it in the highly competitive world of fashion modeling you need to possess a unique look that sets you apart from the rest of the crowd of hopeful talents. If you’ve got it covered in the appearance department, you’ll also need to have a natural ability to work in front of the camera and the natural confidence to pull it off successfully.

It can be an exciting day when you are called to show up for that all-important, first-ever fashion modeling session. It can also be a little stressful when you find out that fashion modeling work sounds a lot easier than it actually is. Holding a bunch of strange poses with an army of photographers, make-up artists, stylists and other crew scrambling around you can be very demanding. Especially if it is your first shoot.

Here are some things to know before that first fashion modeling shoot:

•    Be on time, preferably 30 minutes early.
•    You will be told what to wear.
•    You will be told to come with or without make-up.
•    Bring your own make-up too.
•    Be prepared to spend a long day on the job.
•    You will be provided with a toilet.
•    You should be provided a place to change clothing.
•    You should be provided a place to park.
•    You should be provided with meals.
•    Do not comply with instructions you feel uncomfortable about.
